150 firefighters deployed to assist with Stellies fire
A blaze broke out at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in the Stellenbosch area on Monday afternoon.
CAPE TOWN - The Cape Winelands Fire Department says about a 150 firefighters were deployed to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve on Tuesday morning.
A blaze broke out in the area in Stellenbosch on Monday afternoon and comes just days after authorities managed to bring a blaze that ravaged the South Peninsula under control.
Fire official Jaco Thuynsma says, "The progress was slow, due to the rain difficulty and early nightfall. Staff was limited in terms of application of fighting the fire so we stood down for the evening and the team's monitored the fire during the course of the night."
On Monday, the gates to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve were closed with security only giving access to fire engines.
From the gate, dense clouds of smoke hovered above the mountain slope.
The fire attracted curious locals wanting to take photographs but they were turned away.
