JOHANNESBURG - It's emerged that murdered South African rapper Nkululeko 'Flabba' Habedi was involved in an argument with his girlfriend in the hours before he was stabbed to death at his home in Alexandra.

Habedi was confirmed dead on the scene, in his bedroom, by Emergency Services earlier on Monday.

His girlfriend has since been taken into custody and charged with murder.

The Skwatta Kamp member's death has been met with shock by South Africa's hip hop community and his fans, who watched him perform on national television for the last time at the weekend.

His close friend and fellow group member Lebo 'Shugasmakx' Mothibe on Monday afternoon said the rapper argued with his girlfriend before leaving a club in the early hours of the morning.

"We're not sure exactly who said what, but it was any sort of lovers quarrel, as usual. It's just one of those things. We don't know what led to what happened. No one will really know because none of us were there."

Habedi's brother Tshepo said he tried everything to revive him.

"When I got there I found him on the floor and I tried everything; CPR, I tried to stop the blood from the wound. Obviously there must have been an argument - that's what my little brother told me, because I was asleep. He told me that they started arguing and they locked him outside."

The late rapper won several awards for his work with Skwatta Kamp and his solo projects, including Best Rap Album at the 2007 SAMA awards for his album Nkuli vs Flabba.

He got his nickname 'Flabba' after he heard his grandmother saying the word flabbergasted once. The rapper was amused, looked it up and found that it meant leaving people surprised.
