Firefighters mourn the loss of fallen pilot Hendrik Marais
Hendrik Marais was killed when his helicopter crashed while assisting in efforts to contain the fire.
CAPE TOWN - While around 60 firefighters continue to battle a blaze at Cape Point this evening, Working on Fire says they are deeply saddened after the loss of one of their most decorated pilots.
Hendrik Marais was killed when his helicopter crashed while assisting in efforts to contain the fire this afternoon.
It's understood the chopper crashed in mountainous terrain during a forced landing.
Officials are still on the scene and have cordoned off all roads leading to the crash site.
Working on fire's Evelyn Holtzhausen says before joining their team Marais flew for the South African Police Service and the Air Force.
"We have expressed condolences to his family. Speaking to a number of pilots, they are deeply traumatised. There's a great sense of camaraderie among the pilots and when something like this happens, it really has an impact on all of them."
