JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks have seized R20 million worth of unprocessed gold after raids on several properties in Springs in Ekurhuleni, the Johannesburg CBD and Limpopo.
This follows an 18 month investigation into an international syndicate dealing in gold.
In addition to bricks of gold, the Hawks officers also seized documents and ammunition from the houses.
No arrests were made but 46 people believed to be linked to the syndicate have been arrested since police started their probe in 2013.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says, "We are dealing with a trans-national syndicate, they are highly organised. Normally they would transport the gold from Mozambique. They get it in our country illegally then take it to a refinery."
