Great Westerford building fire under control

CAPE TOWN - A fire at the Great Westerford building in Cape Town been brought under control.

The office park caught alight this morning and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Earlier, firefighters were battling the blaze.

A hydraulic platform is craned over the top of the four-storey building on Main Road to make it easier for firefighters to dowse the flames.

Seven fire trucks are still grouped around the building and scores of onlookers have stopped to watch from across the road.

The fire broke out on a section of the roof at around 9:30am.

The cause and extent of the damage is still unknown.

At the same time, a school next to the building has been evacuated as a precaution.

An eyewitness describes the scene.

"This is unreal scenes here, would you believe that the whole building is on fire. There are yellow flames on the roof. The whole building has been evacuated. There are now fire trucks, everyone is standing here on the main road. It's an absolute horror show, everything is on fire."
