CAPE TOWN - Over a dozen Southern Right Whales had Sea Point residents buzzing on Thursday morning.

Some locals say it's unusual for whales to be sighted at this time of year but experts claim whale sightings aren't uncommon along the Atlantic Seaboard during summer.

Eyewitness News was invited to climb into a kayak to get as close as possible to the whales.

A small group of kayakers took to the water in spotting the large pod.

There were initially 15 whales, but as the day progressed, only a handful could be seen further off the coast.

Their deep calls could also be heard bellowing through the water.
