Union vows to continue fighting Telkom retrenchments
Talks between Telkom & the CWU deadlocked after the company announced the closure of some stores.
JOHANNESBURG - The Communication Workers Union (CWU) says it will continue to fight against Telkom's plans to retrench its members.
The company announced earlier this month it's no longer viable to continue running some of its 95 stores around the country and will be closing them.
The union says Wednesday's meeting with Telkom management deadlocked.
It has accused the telecommunications company of not being transparent with it's restructuring process.
The CWU's Clive Mervyn says, "We've not even looked at alternatives yet and Telkom is already spearheading to continue. Our view is, we must look at those alternatives and negatives and move forward. That's where we're at."
Meanwhile, Telkom's Jacqui O'Sullivan says they will meet with union's again next week.
"The next agreed step will be the convening of the company forum next week, following which, formal consultation on the detail of the matters will begin."
