SA nurses off to Sierra Leone to fight Ebola
The nurses are supported by the AU and depart from OR Tambo International Airport this afternoon.
JOHANNESBURG - As the Ebola death toll passes the 9,000 mark, a group of South African nurses has been deployed to Sierra Leone to intensify the fight against the deadly virus.
The nurses are supported by the African Union (AU) and depart from OR Tambo International Airport in just a few hours.
The AU's Olawale Maiyegun says this plan could not have come at a better time.
"They've been deployed to Sierra Leone at a time when, if I can put it in a very good way, three or four months ago Ebola was chasing us but now we are chasing Ebola. In other words, we have entered a new phase in the fight against the disease."
