EASTERN CAPE - Eastern Cape police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the death of a five-month-old baby.

The suspect is alleged to have beaten the infant to death on Friday.

He is currently in hospital under police guard for injuries he sustained during a vigilante attack following the incident.

The police's Nkosikho Mzuku said, "This five month old baby was allegedly smashed on the wall by a man who was mentally ill. The baby passed away and the man was later beaten up by the community. The police arrived and he was arrested."

Earlier this week, a baby was killed in Pretoria when a man allegedly used the newborn baby as a club to assault his girlfriend.

The man has appeared in the Pretoria Prison Court on charges of murder.

Police arrested the 32-year-old Cameroonian man on Sunday night near the Rebecca Street flat he shared with his girlfriend and daughter.

It's understood Alexander Forba ripped the child from the woman's back, grabbing the baby girl by her feet, and smashed her against the woman.
