JOHANNESBURG - The family of a 17-year-old matric pupil at a school in Alberton are demanding answers about the teenager's mysterious death.

Lerato Malekutu died in class on Monday at the Eden Park Secondary School.

Police have opened an inquest into the death but questions remain about what led to her fall.

The girl's uncle says the school's version is that the teenager collapsed and hit her head on the floor but the family believes there's more to the story.

He says witnesses saw another pupil pull the 17-year-old's chair from under her, leading to the fall.

"The school did not tell me that, they told me that she fell. It was a cover up. Her best friend was the one who told the police the truth and the police told me."

The Gauteng Education Department says it's not in a position to comment on the conflicting versions of events and has launched an investigation to get to the truth.
