Clanwilliam Dam to get upgrade
The upgrades will cost the Water and Sanitation department R2,5 billion.
CAPE TOWN - The wheels are finally in motion for the long-awaited upgrades to the Clanwilliam Dam.
Yesterday, Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane met with project managers, farmers and residents in the West Coast, Cedarberg and Matzikama municipalities to discuss the department's plan.
The upgrades will cost the department R2,5 billion.
Last month a section of a canal connecting to the dam broke and caused millions of rands worth of crop damage to the farms in the area.
The department's Rashid Khan says "The Clanwilliam Dam was built in the 1930s and it was upgraded in the 1960s and now we want to upgrade it because there's a bit of a dam safety factor. We want to increase the wall by about 13 metres and therefore we will have more water."
