JOHANNESBURG - A Kaizer Chiefs soccer player who has been on the run since the weekend has been arrested, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Police say the 26-year-old was arrested a short while ago in Silverton, Pretoria.

He allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and damaged her car in Mamelodi.

Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said, "He was arrested and was detained in Silverton."

He will appear the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of assault and malicious damage to property.

Police refused to confirm the identity of the soccer player before he appears in court.

But Kaizer Chiefs released a statement on its website, saying forward George Lebese handed himself over to the authorities in connection with what the club is calling "an incident".

Club spokesperson Vina Maphosa said, "We are aware of the incident allegedly involving our player and we can only confirm that he's handed himself over to authorities."
