CAPE TOWN - Ex-convict and one-time politician Gayton McKenzie has called Julius Malema 'a thug' in a scathing open letter to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader.

Malema is facing an internal revolt from members who are fed up with the way he's running the party.

The EFF's national leadership has blamed the division on McKenzie and businessman Kenny Kunene who contested last year's elections as the Patriotic Alliance, but failed to make it to Parliament.

The open letter, titled 'Thug to Thug', is a no-holds-barred deeply personal attack on Malema by a man who claims to have helped the EFF leader when he was down and out.

McKenzie says he and Kunene are not to blame for the divisions within the EFF.

He says Malema is obsessed with President Jacob Zuma and has accused the EFF leader of taking orders from a faction within the African National Congress (ANC).

McKenzie also claims Malema has been in talks with the ruling party.
