CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it's written to the chairperson of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board following a decision by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi that gives her too much power over the public broadcaster.

The party says the decision could see the SABC turned from national broadcaster to state broadcaster.

The DA's Gavin Davis says the memorandum was signed in secret last year and poses a serious threat to freedom of the press.

"It effectively turns the SABC into a state broadcaster which will have a profound impact on freedom of press because effectively it put the public broadcaster in the hands of a politician. We cannot sit back and allow this to happen."
