CAPE TOWN - An estimated 255 metre long red carpet will be rolled out for President Jacob Zuma next week when he delivers his State of the Nation Address at an event marked by pomp and ceremony.

Strict protocol and formalities have set the tone over the years, but 2015 could be different if Julius Malema's Members of Parliament (MPs) make good on their much-hyped threat to disrupt the event.

They want Zuma to answer questions about his Nkandla home.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPs will be allowed to wear their signature red overalls on the red carpet on Thursday, which means they won't be strolling into the National Assembly chamber in their birthday suits as they had threatened.

Other Parliamentarians and prominent guests traditionally make their mark in designer wear, sharp suits and the occasional fashion faux pas.

Budgeted at R4 million, the event includes a 200 person junior and civil guard of honour, a flyover and a 21 gun salute.

After the president's speech, the 1,700 guests will sip on no more than 640 bottles of wine during a cocktail reception on the Parliamentary Precinct.
