JOHANNESBURG - Sandton police say they're hoping two suspects arrested during a brazen shootout on Kelvin Drive will lead officers to their accomplices.

One of the suspects was wounded when the gang of four alleged house robbers opened fire on officers during peak hour traffic on Tuesday afternoon.

The other two suspects fled the scene in a hijacked car.

Police say they'd been tracking the gang for weeks when one detective spotted the white Ford Ranger on Summit Road in Sandton.

This man says he was waiting at a red traffic light when detectives told the suspects to get out of the stolen car.

"I ran towards Summit Road, I was just scared. It was just really scary."

He says bullets were then fired from all directions and the Ford the gang was travelling in crashed into another vehicle.

One suspect was wounded in the exchange before the police pounced on another who was trying to hijack a vehicle to escape.

Two motorists were also injured in the incident.
