CAPE TOWN - Two wards are to be contested in by-elections in the Western Cape today.

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) will go head-to-head in Ceres and Swellendam.

The ward in Ceres became vacant when an ANC councillor was fired for making calls to a sex hotline during office hours while the party's councillor in Swellendam passed away.

DA provincial leader Ivan Meyer says his party is prepared to win.

"I'm confident that we're going to do well in Witzenberg and Swellendam. These wards are currently ANC wards, but the DA is targeting to win both and I'm very confident because we have enough support on the ground."

But the ANC's Songezo Mjongile says the party will be able to hold onto these wards.

"We will be able to retain the two wards, the ward in Witzenberg was taken from the DA and the one ward in Swellendam was won by us in 2011."
