PRETORIA - Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi's funeral is underway in Pretoria.

In 2010 Selebi was convicted of corruption.

He died at the age of 64 last Friday from kidney disease related to diabetes.

The former police commissioner was released on medical parole in 2012, having served a year of his sentence for corruption.

A casket draped in an African National Congress flag has been brought to the front of the church with colourful bouquets placed next to a large portrait of Selebi.

Family and senior government officials including the Hawk's Anwa Dramat are among the mourners gathered at the church in Moreleta Park.

His niece Vivian Smith says Selebi was like a father to her.

"When seasons end for all things in life it's easy to accept but when a legend falls you can't fathom how life will be without him."

She says her uncle was a selfless man who never boasted.
