Emalahleni man dies of heart attack as his shop is looted
It is understood locals were protesting over service delivery when a group tried to steal goods.
JOHANNESBURG - Police are investigating the death of a man who collapsed and died of a heart attack in Emalahleni while community members allegedly tried to loot his shop.
It is understood locals were protesting over service delivery yesterday when a group tried to steal goods from foreign-owned shops.
The man, believed to be a foreign national, tried to escape as the crowd approached his store but collapsed and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police's Solomon Makgale says the incident is not connected to the attacks on foreign nationals in Gauteng.
Makgale says community members used service delivery issues as an excuse to loot.
"Normally when there's a protest of that nature the people engaged in the protest would often vent their anger at some of the spaza shops."
