Vas Soni resigns from SIU
Soni says he will step down for what he says are intensely personal reasons.
JOHANNESBURG - The head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) advocate Vas Soni has announced he will be resigning.
He says he is stepping down for what he says are intensely personal reasons.
Soni was appointed head of the unit by President Jacob Zuma 18 months ago.
He says he is leaving to spend more time caring for his wife who has fallen ill.
"Spending long hours at the office don't allow me to spend time with my family and I owe that to my wife."
He says he would have liked to finish what he started at the unit.
"It's been a challenging period and we've had important investigations and I think the unit is important in the fight against corruption and maladministration."
Soni also says he believes he has improved the way the unit operates.
