Growing calls to declare Gauteng ANC chief whip unfit
Brian Hlongwa has been implicated in alleged massive corruption in the Gauteng health dept.
JOHANNESBURG - There are calls for Gauteng Premier David Makhura to fire former health MEC Brian Hlongwa over corruption allegations.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held a meeting in Johannesburg today to discuss additional court papers that implicate the African National Congress Gauteng chief whip in alleged massive corruption in the Gauteng Health Department.
The papers were filed last year in response to an asset forfeiture application by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) against Hlongwa's R7.2 million house in Bryanston and against two service providers that had multi-million rand contracts with the department.
The DA's Jack Bloom says Gauteng hospitals have not recovered from Hlongwa's poor leadership and alleged corruption.
"Financial controls and the department to this very day have not recovered."
Bloom says Makhura needs to take action urgently.
"I think that he needs to fire Hlongwa in order to distance himself from the increasing evidence of corruption against the former MEC."
The DA says it will put pressure on government to ensure Hlongwa is held accountable.
