Paarl prison stabbing gang-related
Nine officials were wounded, 5 seriously at the Drakenstein Correctional Services Facility near Paarl.
CAPE TOWN - Correctional Services Western Cape Regional Commissioner Delekile Klaas has confirmed inmates belonging to various gangs were involved in the attack of several warders at its Drakenstein Correctional Services Facility near Paarl.
Nine officials were wounded, five of them seriously.
The incident occurred in the medium a section's cell B9 during routine patrols and searches this morning.
The department says the inmates involved in the stabbings belonged to the Numbers gangs.
The prisoners are affiliated to the 26s, 27s and 28s gangs.
It's understood 10 officials entered the cell when the prisoners charged and attacked them while conducting routine morning patrols and searches.
They were wounded in the neck, head and chest.
Department and police probes are underway.
