CAPE TOWN - Five prison warders have been stabbed at the Drakenstein Correctional Centre in Paarl.

Eyewitness News understands the attack happened when warders unlocked the cells this morning.

The facility has since been placed on lockdown.

The Department of Correctional Services's Simphiwe Xako says while details are still sketchy at this stage, the officials were stabbed quite badly.

"We are not sure whether this attack is linked to previous attacks which took place on 4 January in what we suspected was a gang-related attack which is part of ongoing rituals."

Correctional Services Western Cape Regional Commissioner Delekile Klaas is due to hold a briefing at the prison shortly.
