No water for large parts of JHB this weekend
The city will be doing maintenance on its Eikenhof Pump Station from Saturday evening until Sunday evening.
JOHANNESBURG - While South Africans are bracing for regular power cuts, Johannesburg residents will be without water this weekend.
The city will be doing maintenance on its Eikenhof Pump Station from Saturday evening at 6pm until Sunday evening at 7pm.
Johannesburg Water's Eleanor Mavimbela says large parts of the city will be affected.
"Roodepoort, Randburg, Soweto, Langlaagte and Southdale are among the areas that will be without water."
She said Rand Water will still supply water but at lower capacity and there might be low pressure but water tanks will be provided in those areas.
Last year, a number of suburbs in Johannesburg were without water for several days because of a power outage at its Eikeinhof Pumping Station.
Rand Water attributed the widespread shortages to high demands due to warmer weather conditions.
GAUTENG COULD FACE WATER CRISIS
Gauteng could face a water crisis in two to three years' time if a long-term solution to acid mine drainage isn't found.
That was the message from the Department of Water and Sanitation to Members of Parliament in November.
Officials briefed the Oversight Committee on measures taken to deal with mining's toxic legacy, especially on the Witwatersrand where millions of litres of poisonous water is being pumped daily from old mines lying under Johannesburg.
The department's Marius Keet said it's not possible to continue diluting treated acid mine drainage with good quality water from the Vaal River without prejudicing Gauteng's water supply.
