CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille says renaming streets and other geographic locations in the city encourages reconciliation.

There's been an outcry in some quarters over plans to rename Table Bay Boulevard after former President F.W. de Klerk.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is said to have given his backing to the move.

De Lille says following various processes, the name change is set to go ahead.

"Public participating overwhelmingly favoured the name change. It is now subject to approval by the council on Wednesday next week and then we will proceed to rename the boulevard after F.W. de Klerk."

Meanwhile, Vanguard Drive has been renamed Jakes Gerwel Drive in honour of the late activist and academic.
