JOHANNESBURG - Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a shoot out between suspected illegal miners and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers in Benoni that forced authorities to call for back-up as they came under fire.

The EMPD says about 10 suspects were involved in the shoot out with around 20 officers at a gold mine dump near New Modder Road yesterday.

No-one was wounded in the shooting but EMPD says the suspects managed to escape after fleeing into the veld nearby.

Spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago says the men unexpectedly opened fire on two officers on routine patrol.

"Suddenly guys came out of the bushes and shot at the cops with rifles. We suspect AK47s. The cops returned fire and requested back-up."
