CAPE TOWN - The Bellville Magistrates Court has referred a man accused of stabbing a number of people at a Bellville supermarket for mental observation.

The 45-year-old man appeared in court again earlier today.

He faces three counts of attempted murder after stabbing a customer, a bakery assistant and a merchandiser at a Pick n Pay in Boston with a scissors earlier this week.

The suspect saw a district surgeon on Wednesday who recommended that he be transferred to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

There he will undergo an evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

However, there are currently no beds available at the hospital.

The case has been postponed for 30 days until the accused has undergone treatment.

He remains in custody.
