Northam employees instructed to return to work
Northam has been granted an urgent interdict to end the unprotected strike at its Zondereinde Mine.
JOHANNESBURG - Northam Platinum says the Labour Court has granted an urgent interdict to end an unprotected strike at its Zondereinde Mine.
It says employees have been instructed to return to work or face disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
The industrial action among some 3,500 workers started before the night shift yesterday.
Northam says it's encouraged the majority union at the mine, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), to ensure workers return to their posts by tomorrow.
More than 7,000 NUM members went on an 11-week wage strike that ended in January last year at the mid-tier platinum producer.
The wider platinum industry is still recovering from a sometimes violent five-month strike last year by the NUM's arch rival the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, which hit Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin, the world's top producers.
