JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana defender Patrick Phungwayo's dream of participating in Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) came to a sad end before it even started.

The defender was hoping to recover in time, but the severity of his knee injury will see him miss the entire tournament.

Team doctor Thulani Ngwenya says they did everything they could but nothing could change his condition.

"Clinically he didn't show any form of big severity, that's why then we kept the player and we tried to give him support and treatment as much as we can. And the scans confirmed that indeed he's got medial collateral ligament."

Meanwhile, Andile Jali has been cleared to play against Cameroon this evening. The Bafana playmaker has been struggling with his fitness recently, but according to Ngwenya, he has been given the all clear.

"Andile came here with an injury, however, it was not a serious injury and he's not training with the team. He did go under rehabilitation and now we have declared him fully fit to play."

The game starts at 9pm.
