Cop maintain heavy presence in Manenberg after shootout
The City’s JP Smith says police will not withdraw from the area until the situation is under control.
CAPE TOWN - Law enforcement officials are maintaining a strong presence in gang-stricken Manenberg following a flare up in violence this week.
Officers were involved in a shootout in the area on Wednesday night which ran into the early hours of Thursday morning. It's believed the gun battle stems from the recent murder of a gang leader.
A member of the Hard Livings gang was also gunned down in his car at the weekend.
The city of Cape Town's JP Smith says police will not withdraw from the area until the situation is under control.
"Police will remain in the area, they have been in the area continually. I can tell you that even during the festive season the Metro Police and police have been working in Manenberg, they haven't withdrawn at any point."
Smith said the conflict raged throughout the night and over 200 shots were fired.
