Pass rate drops in key matric subjects
Maths, physical science, maths literacy and home languages are key subjects being monitored.
JOHANNESBURG - Quality assurance group Umalusi says it is concerned by the decreasing pass rate in key matric subjects.
Maths, physical science, maths literacy and home languages are key subjects being monitored by the education department.
Umalusi's John Foreman says these subjects are key determining factors of the overall pass rate, which is expected to decrease.
The assessment body says poor performance in these key areas has affected the overall pass rate.
"The key subjects are poorer this year than last year."
A decrease in pass rate for English home language has been highlighted as a particular area of concern.
Failing to achieve 40 percent for a home language subject guarantees failure of the entire matric year.
Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to announce the matric 2014 pass rate in Auckland Park tomorrow evening.
