Condition of young cancer survivor improves
Seven-year-old Annamarie Tewitz has been taken off a ventilator.
JOHANNESBURG - Seven-year-old Annamarie Tewitz, who has been fighting for her life in a Johannesburg hospital, will now be taken off a ventilator after her condition improved overnight.
The Germiston girl was in a critical condition in ICU last night after yet another surgery to fix a shunt placed in an operation last Sunday.
Yesterday the girl's mother Christa Tewitz told Eyewitness News that it was an uphill battle all year to even get surgeons to see her daughter.
She has since lodged a complaint with the Gauteng Health Department, with spokesperson Prince Hamnca says the matter will now be referred to a special unit for investigation.
"The matter has been brought to our attention. We are going to refer it to our quality assurance team who will investigate the matter."
The child was diagnosed with brain cancer in February this year just two weeks after she started grade 1.
She is now in remission after undergoing chemotherapy and surgery.
