CAPE TOWN - The Transport Department says while road deaths over this festive season have decreased, officials will still be stepping up road safety campaigns.

The ministry says there has been a 35 percent reduction in road fatalities compared to the same period last year.

The department's Ishmael Mnisi says, "All road users must obey the rules of the road so that they arrive alive. However, we are pleased with the decrease that we've seen. But we are still concerned that one death is too many."

Over 700 people have lost their lives on the country's roads since 1 December.
