CAPE TOWN - Three people including a two-year-old child have been killed in a car accident on the N1 highway in Cape Town.

Emergency officials are currently on scene.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa says the circumstances surrounding the accident will be investigated.

"Just outside Sable Road from the N1 towards Cape Town, there is one single motor vehicle accident. A driver lost control of his vehicle and a 27-year-old male, 22-year-old woman and a two-year-old child died in this accident.

"The medical team and emergency services are the scene of this accident."

Meanwhile, efforts to reduce road fatalities over the festive season are finally paying off, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Wednesday.

The death toll declined by 35 percent this festive season, compared to the same period last year.

Light motor vehicles are responsible for 46 percent of fatal road crashes, while taxis account for nine percent of collisions.

Peters said motorists need to check whether their vehicles are roadworthy before heading off on their journey.
