JOHANNESBURG - The City of Tshwane says there are large power outages in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, this morning due to vandalism at one of the major substations.

The city says officials in its electricity control room received a trip signal where it was found that the substation was badly damaged, with cables, switch gears and other components stolen by criminals.

A technical team is currently on-site to find switching alternatives in order to restore service to residents.

The city's Selby Bokaba said affected areas included C1 all the way to C5.

"Unknown people vandalised our substations in Mamelodi, which resulted in a power outage affecting many areas."

Selby says it could take up to two days before power is restored.

"Due to the extent of the damage, the repair work is estimated to take up to 48 hours."

He apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused.
