CAPE TOWN - Both the City of Cape Town and Cape Cultural and Carnival Committee on Tuesday agreed to change the date of the annual minstrel carnival.

This is because it coincides with an Islamic religious holiday.

The annual event will now take place on 5 January.

The event was moved as prophet Muhammad's birthday is celebrated on previous date.

The carnival route will now also revert back to the original course through the Bo-Kaap.

The committee's Kevin Momberg says, "The city is going to assist us in our planning."

He says the only thing the committee is unsure about is if the public will be available to attend the annual celebrations in their masses.
