JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo will on Monday visit the victims of a blaze at Slovoville informal settlement in Soweto.

Over 50 shacks were burnt to the ground over the weekend, leaving residents homeless just days before Christmas.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The department will assess how best to help those left destitute.

Mamabolo said he contacted partners to implement urgent relief.

"The purpose of my visit will be to make an assessment on the effect of the fire. I'm concerned that people have lost their homes just before Christmas."

At the same time, nearly 100 people have been displaced in shack fires across Cape Town.

Fires were reported in Philippi, Gugulethu and Langa.

No deaths or injuries were reported.
