JOHANNESBURG - As authorities urge motorists to exercise caution on the roads this festive season, four men have been found dead inside a car in Soweto in what appears to have been an accident.

The men were found trapped inside the vehicle in Dobsonville on Sunday.

Police say it appears the car hit rocks before it crashed into a tree.

The death toll on the country's roads is expected to rise as holiday makers make their way to various destinations.

The official toll since 1 December stands at 291.

In the Western Cape, officials say they've stepped up road safety campaigns.

Spokesperson Kenny Africa says three long-distance public transport vehicles were impounded at the weekend for operating illegally.

"Throughout the festive season we will be on the lookout for these busses and taxis on our roads and if they're not roadworthy, we will suspend the use of that vehicle, take them off the road and impound where necessary."
