CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says close to 350 people were displaced in shack fires across the Peninsula over the weekend.

The fires broke out in areas including Philippi, Langa, Khayelitsha, Ravensmead and Kraaifontein.

Disaster risk teams had their hands full this weekend, as 95 informal dwellings were gutted by blazes since Friday.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Disaster Risk Management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says, "We're assisting the affected households in order to rebuild their lives and to ensure that the necessary assistance and relief aid is being provided."

Officials have once again urged informal settlers to exercise caution when making fires in or near their homes.
