JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Social Services Department says it's now trying to find a place of safety for a teenager, who lost his entire family, after they allegedly ate poisonous mushrooms.

The Olievenhoutbosch family was rushed to hospital two weeks ago after they started vomiting.

Four family members died last weekend after receiving intensive treatment at the Kalafong Hospital.

The 17-year-old teenager refused to eat supper that night saying he was tired of eating mushrooms.

Social Development's Thebe Mohatle says the teenager's devastated and will receive ongoing counselling from social workers.

"As far as his welfare is concerned there is commitment from social development to find him a place of safety where he will be accommodated until grade 12."

He now faces the painful task of burying both his parents and two siblings this weekend. The mushrooms are believed to have been picked from the garden of the mother's employer.

Postmortem results have been released and police are investigating.
