JOHANNESBURG - Shoppers at the Maponya Shopping Mall in Soweto have pleaded with police and security companies to work harder to ensure customers are safe.

On Wednesday, seven armed men held up guards and staff at gunpoint at the Pick n Pay inside the mall and randomly opened fire while fleeing the scene.

Nothing was stolen and no one was wounded.

One shopper told Eyewitness News, "It's not only Pick n Pay. Robbers are targeting all stores, so we are no longer safe in South Africa,"

Another woman said, "It's happening all over the place, where are we safe?"

Authorities are now searching for the armed men who were dressed in Pick n Pay uniforms.

The incident happened moments before the store opened.

Police say the men jumped over a wall and dispersed into a hostel near the mall.
