Suspected gold smugglers expected in court
Police found 50 kilograms of gold worth R23 million in the suspects’ vehicles.
JOHANNESBURG - The six suspects arrested for allegedly smuggling gold will appear in the Pretoria North Magistrates Court today.
The men were arrested at the Pumulani Toll Plaza on the N1 Highway in Pretoria on Monday after police found 50 kilograms of gold in the vehicles they were travelling in.
Police found 50 kilograms of gold worth R23 million in the suspects' vehicles.
They say four of the suspects arrested are employees of a cash-in-transit company.
Three vehicles and five firearms were confiscated.
Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko says the suspects are facing charges of dealing and smuggling precious metal.
"We believe that these men are part of a bigger syndicate dealing in the smuggling of illicit gold. The investigations are continuing."
