JOHANNESBURG - The office of the National Police Commissioner says Riah Phiyega remains focused despite reports speculating about whether she faces being fired.

News emerged at the weekend that Phiyega had locked horns with Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko over an investigation into how the police service functions.

The City Press newspaper made public parts of several explosive emails traded between the two and claimed that the investigation could lead to Phiyega being axed.

But the police's Solomon Makgale has played down the tension and some of the criticism leveled against the commissioner.

"She remains focused on the work she must do. She indicated that she's not a criminal and didn't tip off anyone and that was the finding of the National Prosecuting Authority after their investigation."

Phiyega was cleared of defeating the ends of justice allegations involving Western Cape police commissioner but continues to be criticised for her handling of the Marikana shooting.
