Monday blues as stage 1 load shedding activated
Eskom says the situation has changed since this morning and stage 1 load shedding has been implemented.
At the weekend, the power utility implemented the worst power cuts the country has seen as it attempts to reduce the supply versus demand ratio.
Eskom's Andrew Etzinger says load shedding will be implemented for the rest of the day.
"Unfortunately the situation has changed. Three large generators have not come back into service from the weekend and that changes the picture considerably now. Unfortunately we have needed to implement stage 1 of our load shedding schedule."
Earlier this morning, Eskom said lights will be on this week, but warned that from Thursday the possibility of rolling blackouts will depend on the extent to which its managed to recover its hydro power station reserves and its diesel tanks.
Large parts of the country were plunged into darkness for the third consecutive weekend after Eskom declared stage 3 load shedding on Friday.
Meanwhile, Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona is today expected to issue an official update on the state of electricity supply and maintenance at its power stations.
