IPID investigates WC police brutality
A sergeant has been suspended after a video of the attack went viral on social media this week.
CAPE TOWN - The assault of a 50-year-old woma n by three police officers in Cape Town is being investigated both internally and by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
A sergeant has been suspended after a video of the attack that took place in Kraaifontein last month went viral on social media this week.
In the video, the 45-year-old official and two of his colleagues can be seen manhandling the woman.
At one stage, an official stands on the woman's neck as he tries to subdue her.
The attack took place in full view of the public and onlookers can be seen screaming at the officers.
Western Cape Police Chief Arno Lamoer says police have assisted the victim in laying charges.
"The officer was identified and suspended and we will also take action against the officer."
Lamoer said it's infuriating that this incident took place at a time when there is heightened awareness around violence against women and children.
