Volunteer firefighter dies battling Cape blaze
The 44-year-old man from Ocean View suddenly collapsed while fighting a fire in the Kommetjie area.
CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management has confirmed one of its volunteers has died while battling a fire in the Kommetjie area in the Western Cape.
It's understood the man had a heart attack on Wednesday night.
Disaster Risk Management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said, "The 44-year-old man from Ocean View suddenly collapsed and two off-duty medical doctors immediately assisted with resuscitation, but unfortunately their efforts were unsuccessful."
Meanwhile, firefighters are still closely monitoring the vegetation blaze.
Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service's Theo Layne says, "A the moment we've still got a number of crew on the scene. The fire is still high up on the slopes of the mountain. There are no major flare-ups."
