'Mandela is still an important symbol of forgiveness'
Ahmed Kathrada says South Africans must carry on with the legacy that Madiba left behind.
JOHANNESBURG - Struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada says South Africans must carry on with the legacy that former President Nelson Mandela left behind, reminding people that the journey ahead is still long, even if the former Statesman has passed on.
This Friday will mark one year since Tata Madiba passed away in his Houghton home.
Kathrada will be part of a delegation attending a wreath-laying ceremony at the Union Buildings, where Madiba will be remembered during an official commemoration event.
He says Mandela will be greatly missed by the nation and is still an important symbol of forgiveness.
"As an individual, as a leader, we miss him of course. But that doesn't mean that the country has come to a stop. He would be the first one to remind us that he was just an individual, always part of a collective."
