Malema's tax debt blues
Julius Malema’s terms to pay off the R4m he owes to Sars was extended by the High Court in Pretoria.
JOHANNESBURG - Questions have been raised around Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) leader Julius Malema's ability to settle his tax debt after the High Court in Pretoria extended his terms to pay off the R4 million he owes the South African Revenue Service (Sars).
Malema claimed several months ago that EFF party structures had mobilised members to deposit money into a trust set up to help him pay the taxman.
"So on 1 December, that's when the matter will be struck off the roll because the last payment is on the 28th of November... Then we'll just come here for the formality of them withdrawing the case. "
But fast forward to December and Sars confirmed that by mutual agreement between the parties, Malema has another three and a half months to settle his debt.
The EFF leader could not be reached for comment.
