Gauteng Health Department restocking medication
Gauteng Health Department says it’s partnered with the private sector to deliver drugs to affected hospitals.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Health Department says its partnership with the private sector to deliver drugs to state hospitals experiencing shortages is working.
In recent weeks facilities such as the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital have had to postpone scheduled surgeries due to a shortage of anaesthetics.
The department says affected hospitals are being restocked.
Gauteng state hospitals have experienced serious drug shortages as the province's contractors failed to deliver the volumes of medication required.
The health department has now teamed up with the private sector which will share its contractors to rescue affected public facilities.
The department says the partnership has allowed hospitals to continue functioning normally while the backlog is addressed.
Officials say while the intervention has been successful, it's unclear at this stage when public sector contractors will be able to fully meet the department's medical needs.
