Bryanston substation bursts into flames
No injuries or fatalities have been reported and the fire department has been alerted.
JOHANNESBURG - A sub-station has apparently exploded in Bryanston on the corner of Hobart and West Hertfort roads.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported and ER24 officials on the scene say City Power officials have been alerted.
The cause of the incident is not clear at the moment.
ER24's Werner Vermaak explains, "We heard a very loud explosion in Bryanston and as we looked up to the sky we saw this dark cloud of smoke. We decided to go and investigate. At the moment it looks like one of the transformers is still alight. The fire department and City Power have been alerted."
Meanwhile, Eskom says more pressure is being placed on the power grid with a conveyor belt failure at the Lethabo Power Station in the Vaal which supplies 10 percent of the country's power.
The utility says it has to reduce the output of the power station from time to time to control the emission of thousands of tons of ash.
The power utility has implemented the second phase of load shedding across the country.
